Peñarol 3-2 Fénix

Uruguayan giants Penarol moved up to fifth after defeating Fenix 3-2 in an action packed match corresponding to the fifth round of the Apertura Championship.

Penarol started brightly, and in the first few minutes came close to opening the scoring when Alberto Acosta had a good shot from outside the box pushed out for a corner by Fenix’s goalkeeper Ignacio De Leon.

Penarol created many opportunities to break the deadlock, but De Leon reacted well, especially when he saved a Pablo Russo effort when the striker was through on goal. Just three minutes before the halftime break Penarol was rewarded for their persistence. Argentine striker Pablo Russo had a fine shot saved by De Leon, but Alberto Acosta shot in the rebound to give Penarol a well deserved lead.

In the second half Fenix came out looking for the equaliser and it arrived in the 57th minute thanks to former Nacional player Gonzalo Amarilla. In similar fashion to Penarol’s first goal, this time Flores saved a Nicolas Vigneri shot, but Amarilla reacted first to poke in the rebound. Just three minutes later Penarol was back in the lead, as Eduardo Mieres outjumped a defender to head in after Diego Rodriguez swung in a corner from the left.

In the 69th minute Alberto Acosta put Penarol 3-1 up with a tremendous strike, for his second of the afternoon. Penarol broke on the counterattack with some great interchanges, and when close to the Fenix area Russo back healed the ball to Rodriguez, who sent a pass to Acosta, that delicately slotted the ball home. In the final minute of the match Fenix pulled a goal back through halftime substitute Henry Gimenez. Gimenez drilled the ball past a flatfooted Flores in the Penarol goal, after a good attacking move.

Penarol hero Alberto Acosta, who hasn’t been a regular for Penarol since moving from Cerrito last season comments: “I was waiting to have this opportunity, so that I could make the most of it, and to show the coach (Fernando Morena) what I am capable of. Everyone has to respect his decisions and when we are given the chance to play we must perform”.
