ADO Den Haag 0 - 2 PSV (Abondened)

Some 7, 500 spectators had come to the ADO Den Haag Zuiderpark Stadium. Some of them chanted offensive chants, which was the reason that the match was eventually abandoned ten minutes from final time.

PSV had the brightest of all possible starts in Den Haag. Only 41 seconds were on the clock, when the opener was scored. Vonlanthen started a solo run and was lucky the Spanish ADO Den Haag defender Saavedra could not dispossess him. He unleashed a rather inaccurately placed shot, but the ball went across the line all the same, when it somehow took a curved deflection; 0-1. PSV fielded a side in which Vogel had taken the place of Cocu, who was troubled by a mild attack of migraine. Moreover Lucius,
Lamey and Vonlanthen were also included in the starting line-up.

The players fought out some physical challenges, but referee Temmink did not have to book anyone in the first forty-five minutes. For a long time the visitors did not have to worry, but in the final ten minutes of the first half, the home team, wearing green-yellow shirts, created some proper chances. On 38 minutes they were really close to scoring the equalizer. A Stroeve header was kicked past PSV keeper Gomes by Van der Gun, but captain Mark van Bommel could clear the ball from the line and PSV were still on top when the final first half whistle went.

At the restart PSV fielded the same team. In the ADO Den Haag side Den Ouden had left the bench to replace his colleague Platvoet. PSV doubled the advantage with their very first move. Alex, whose attacking qualities are sometimes doubted, produced a great pass that found Vonlanthen. The Swiss international player rounded keeper De Vries and prodded the ball into the empty goal; 0-2. Some minutes later Vonlanthen had another opportunity, but this time he was thwarted by the ADO Den Haag goalie. Van Bommel, who had to be careful as a yellow card would have resulted into a one-match ban, was taken off twenty minutes from final time and Cocu, who came on to replace him, was handed the captain’s arm band for the first time this season. With fifteen minutes official time remaining the hosts got a super chance. Van der Gun started the move and his shot touched the chest of Lamey. ADO Den Haag claimed a penalty for hand ball, but referee Temmink waved play on. From then some of the home the fans intensified their offensive chants and after the speaker had warned them, Temmink thought enough was enough and he abandoned the game.
