Iceland 2 - Japan 3: Iceland edged out by Japan

Sunday, 30 May 2004

Striker Tatsuhiko Kubo scored twice in 15 minutes as Japan came from behind to beat ten-man Iceland 3-2 in the opening match of the FA Summer Tournament in Manchester that also features UEFA EURO 2004 bound hosts England.

Kubo scored in the 21st and 36th minutes after Heidar Helguson had put Iceland in front with the first of his two goals in the fifth minute, a fortunate rebound off his head when goalkeeper Seigo Narazaki's punched at a free-kick into the box.

Helguson, of English first division side Watford FC, headed an equaliser five minutes into the second half but Brazilian-born Alex restored Japan's lead with a 57th-minute penalty after a foul on Takayuki Suzuki.

Iceland played the last eight minutes of the match at the City of Manchester stadium with ten men after Brynjar Gunnarsson was sent off following a two-footed tackle on substitute Yasuhito Endo.
