Goalkeeping question finally resolved
HSV (as everyone knows...) is always good for a surprise or two. Speculation has been rife over the past few days at the club regarding the future of the former first choice keeper Martin Pieckenhagen who was quoted yesterday as saying: "It's clear to me that I'm unwanted here". Less than twenty four hours later came the big about turn...Piecke is staying and Tom Starke is going!
That statement means that the keeper currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen Tom Starke, will return there at the end of the season. Toppmöller explained his decision: "We didn't know where we stood with Piecke, we wanted a clear statement from him." Pieckenhagen never wanted to leave HSV and is understandable delighted that the situation has finally been resolved: "I'm delighted to play on for HSV," said Piecke
Toppmöller also announced that Stefan Wächter will be in goal for Saturday's almost sold out Bundesliga round 32 clash at home to star-studded Borussia Dortmund, and that Wächter has a slight head start over Pieckenhagen looking ahead to next season. A fact that doesn't unduly worry the veteran keeper: "That doesn't matter, I'm afraid of no-one," said Pieckenhagen, who amazingly has yet to play under Toppmöller.
