PSV 1 - 0 Shalke 04
PSV had a wonderful start to their Champions League campaign by claiming a 1-0 win over FC Schalke 04. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who scored his first goal of the season on 33 minutes, secured all three points and PSV were rewarded for showing a fighting spirit.
Vennegoor of Hesselink
PSV dominated the first half. They created a number of fair chances and broke the deadlock on the half hour mark. PSV earned their fourth corner and DaMarcus Beasley delivered the perfect cross for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who was left completely unmarked, to powerfully head home. It was the first time this season that ‘VOH’ found the net and he could not have chosen a better moment with PSV performing at the European stage. The hosts had already earned a few chances before the opening goal was scored. Timmy Simons fired a long distance shot, but was thwarted by Schalke keeper Frank Rost. Debutant Ibrahim Afellay superbly set up DaMarcus Beasley whose shot was not powerful enough and the Peruvian winger Jefferson Farfán was a constant nuisance for full left back Hamit Altintop. Levan Kobiashvili was the first player to be cautioned. Schalke were visibly shaken and PSV attempted to kill off the game in the first half, but captain Phillip Cocu hit the side-netting.
Only one thing on their mind
Schalke increased the pressure after the break, but PSV were looking to start counter attacks at the same time. Farfán and Beasley continued to threaten and youngster Afellay was anxious to prove he has made considerable progress of late. Gomes produced a great save from an Altintop effort. At the other end Afellay should have wrapped things up seven minutes from the final whistle, when a fine Theo Lucius pass sent him completely clear. He lacked to power to finish clinically and his poor attempt was comfortably stopped by Rost.
PSV had only one thing on their mind in the closing stages: victory. Guus Hiddink brought on Michael Lamey for Cocu and Robert came on to take over from Vennegoor of Hesselink.
PSV felt the pressure, but supported by a delirious crowd they held on and collected a priceless win in their first Champions League group stage tie.
