Anderson to bolster Benfica ranks

SL Benfica have already started building for next season's hoped-for assault on the UEFA Champions League by signing Brazilian defender Anderson.

Five-year contract
The SC Corinthians captain will switch to the Portuguese SuperLiga leaders for the 2005/06 season, ending a 17-year association with the Sao Paulo club. Anderson, 24, has agreed a five-year contract, with Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira confirming the transfer last night.

Dream move
"I can guarantee that Anderson will be here this summer," Vieira said. Anderson has played more than 200 times for Corinthians, and was part of the side that won the FIFA Club World Championship in 2000. He said: "Playing for Benfica is a dream for me. I know it is a great club and I will adapt easily to Lisbon and to Portugal. I am anxious to start this new adventure."
