Stam setback for Milan

AC Milan defender Jaap Stam will be out for up to three months after undergoing surgery on his left ankle today.

Persistent problem
The 32-year-old Dutchman has been struggling with the problem since joining the Serie A champions from S.S. Lazio last summer. He has managed just three appearances for Milan but Dr Paolo Cherubini, who carried out the operation this morning, said it would take at least ten weeks before he could return to action.

Inzaghi sidelined
Meanwhile, Stam's team-mate Filippo Inzaghi will undergo ankle surgery on Monday, meaning he too will miss the club's remaining UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures at home against FC Shakhtar Donetsk and in Glasgow against Celtic FC. Milan are joint-top of their section, level on nine points with FC Barcelona.
