Hamburg SV 4 - 0 Freiburg

HSV proved that they still had their tails up after their well-deserved 2-0 win away to Borussia Dortmund in round 10 and went at Freiburg from the off. HSV thrashed the visitors 4-0. The side under coach Thomas Doll let the visitors know who was the boss in the AOL Arena in front of 37,967 on Wednesday evening. HSV went at Freiburg as if possessed and the visiting side didn’t seem to have an answer. The Belgian international striker Emile Mpenza opened the scoring on five minutes after superb work by Barbarez.

Plenty of chances
Within the next few minutes further chances were missed by Mpenza, Wicky and Jarolim. On 18 minutes Takahara raced through on goal only to be pulled back by Diarra. With the Japanese striker being the last man, the match referee Fleischer had no choice but to send off Diarra after 18 minutes.

Barbarez on the score sheet
On 28 minutes HSV doubled their advantage as Sergej Barbarez got his name on the score sheet as he latched onto a pinpoint cross from Schlicke. The former HSV keeper Golz let the ball glide through his hands and into the bottom right hand corner. HSV changed down a gear after the second goal but remained dominant.

Finke rings the changes
At the start of the second half the Freiburg coach Volker Finke brought on Müller and Dorn in the hope of stabilising his defence and at the same time, breathing some new life into is front line. The fact is though, that apart from two reasonable incidents featuring Dorn in the opening minutes of the half, Freiburg didn’t really trouble Martin Pieckenhagen in the HSV goal. Freiburg tackled weakly and Sergej Barbarez made the most of that weakness as he scored from an acute angle on 52 minutes to put his side well and truly in the driving seat.

Sergej grabs his third As if that wasn’t enough for the Bosnian international goal-getter, he grabbed his hat trick by finishing off a well organised HSV attack which included good work by Emile Mpenza five minutes later. Thomas Doll brought on Bernardo Romeo for Barbarez, who received well deserved applause. The Argentinean striker was denied a goal by a post shortly after coming on.

Freiburg had no chance
If one assesses the match over 90 minutes, Freiburg (who beat the table-toppers Stuttgart 2-0 last time out), never got a look in and failed to create a single goal chance. The new HSV coach Thomas Doll has had a dream start in charge with two wins in as many games. Long may it continue…
