Borussia Dortmund 0 - 2 Hamburg SV

The new HSV coach Thomas Doll certainly started as he means to go on, as HSV won their first away match of the season, beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in front of 78,000 in the Westfalenstadion on Saturday afternoon (23.10.04). A 10 minute goal by Emile Mpenza and a second half strike by David Jarolim gave HSV a well-deserved victory in round 9 of the Bundesliga. HSV started the game bottom of the Bundesliga table; the victory in Dortmund moves them up to 13 place.

Barbarez superb
Thomas Doll chose the amateur René Klingbeil for his starting line-up and after initial nervest he lad played well. Sergej Barbarez moved back into his usual midfield position, after his defensive debut under the now-former coach Klaus Toppmöller. The Bosnian international was involved in both goals and put in a solid performance, much to the delight of the 5,000 or so HSV fans present.

Mpenza strikes for HSV!
HSV went straight at the home side from the off and soon controlled the game. The home side were very nervous and so was the huge crowd. The visiting defence stood rock solid and any threat by Dortmund was easily dealt with. HSV pushed forward and had Dortmund on the back foot. Barbarez missed the first chance of the match after 4 minutes. Hamburg continued to go at Dortmund and was rewarded with the lead after10 minutes. Sergej Barbarez split the home defence with a clever pas to Mpenza, who advanced into the penalty area on the right. The Belgian international blasted an unstoppable shot past Weidenfeller into the bottom corner to send the hordes of travelling HSV fans into raptures of joy.

Piecke on top form
It took until the 24th minute for Borussia Dortmund to threaten the HSV goal. Jan Koller headed goal wards but Pieckenhagen was up to the challenge, saving superbly down to his right. On 36 minutes Wicky blasted over from the edge of the box. HSV went into the break with a deserved one goal lead.

Solid defensive performance
As expected the home side came out fort he second half and put HSV under pressure with wave upon wave of attacks. The HSV defence was in mean mood and stood firm when the heat was on. Wicky cleared Dortmund’s best effort by Ewerthon off the line.

Jarolim grabs killer goal
Thomas Doll seemed well aware of the dangers of sitting back on a slender lead, and voiciferously screamed to his players that they should not forget to carry on going forward. His players heard him and on 70 minutes scored what turned out to be the killer goal. Barbarez battled for the ball on the left wing. The ball came to Mpenza, who duped the home defence with a superb through ball to the lurking Jarolim who stumbled the ball into the net and stun the home crowd. Nothing much happened after that, and HSV easily played their way to a superb away win which no-one present will forget for a long time.
