NEC 0 - 3 PSV

For fifteen minutes N.E.C and PSV were on equal terms in the Nijmegen De Goffert Stadium, but as the visitors did not concede one single chance and found the net three times themselves, there is nothing to be said against the victory.

The game between N.E.C. and PSV was kicked off at half past six in the evening, a rather unusual moment. The first half was a low-key affair, but still the Eindhoven team earned a few chances. The South Korean wingerPark created the first opportunity, when he brought out a fine save from N.E.C. goalie Gentenaar. The young Peruvian Farfán got the second chance. He outwitted two defenders, but Gentenaar pushed his effort away for a corner kick. PSV earned four corners in the first forty-five minutes, but they could not take advantage from these set pieces.

Exactly on the half hour mark Park rounded Valencia, entered the box and the defender slightly touched Park and then tripped him. Park went down and referee Van Hulten was not in two minds. PSV skipper Van Bommel took his responsibility and although Gentenaar had chosen the right corner, he did not stand a chance, when Van Bommel calmly converted from the spot; 0-1. Minutes later the keeper kept his team in the game, by a great save from a Vennegoor of Hesselink header. This was the moment for N.E.C. to roll up their sleeves and former PSV midfielder Van der Doelen was inspirational. He was rewarded for his dedication with a yellow card, after he had committed a foul on Van Bommel. Five minutes from half time Vennegoor collided into Wielaert in an aerial fight and the N.E.C. fell down. The PSV forward was rightly booked. And when Alex held Niedzilan in the closing stages of the first half, he was also shown a yellow card.

At the restart the same twenty-two players were on the pitch, but the start was very different. In spite of some N.E.C pressure, resulting in five corners, PSV got the best opportunities. A Farfán free kick ricocheted from a wall of defenders across the line and Cocu fired just wide with the outside of his left foot.

Gomes came into action for the first time, when Barrero took a free kick. The Brazilian PSV goalkeeper could not catch the shot, but Van der Doelen blasted the rebound into the side netting. And again quite a few PSV players were booked in the initial stages of the second half. Van Bommel, who superbly put himself clear, was judged to have been off-side. He lost his temper and was booked for dissent. Farfán then set up John de Jong, who had just been brought on as a substitute, but Gentenaar was in the right place to catch his header.

Twenty minutes from final time PSV started a counter attack, as fast as lightning. Vogel was on his way to the Nijmegen goalkeeper, but failed to finish. Two minutes later Lamey did better, when he headed home a De Jong corner at the far post; 0-2. At the death Vonlanthen added a third goal. First the substitute for Farfán hit the post, but Wielaert did not clear well enough and Vonlanthen got another chance and this time he did not hesitate; 0-3.

So PSV have maintained their unbeaten run and quite comfortably grabbed all three points away at N.E.C. in Nijmegen.

Goals: 29 Van Bommel, 72 Lamey, 90 Vonlanthen
