RBC Roosendaal 2 - 5 PSV

PSV had to come from behind twice, but they still had a bright start to the new Eredivisie campaign at RBC Roosendaal. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink inspired his team to an emphatic 2-5 win by scoring three goals in an entertaining game. Last season PSV sailed to a comfortable 0-3 win over RBC Roosendaal and the players may have been confused by the idea that they could easily repeat this tonight again. Although the visitors had most possession of the ball, they found that chances were far and few and RBC keeper was not impressed by free kicks and corners. And when the hosts started their very first counter attack, they immediately struck home. Daelemans squared the ball for Smolders who could not miss.

After half an hour PSV got back in the game. A long distance effort by Van Bommel was tipped away by keeper Aerts, but Vennegoor of Hesselink fired home the rebound with a superb half volley. Only ten minutes later RBC were on top again. Ikedia found Smolders, who was left unmarked, and his shot went home after it had touched the inside of the post. On the stroke of half time Beasley turned provider for Alex, who saw his header go just wide on the wrong of the post.

At the restart PSV had brought on striker Sibon for defender. Ooijer took up the position of Alex in the heart of defence. Sibon proved to be a reliable substitute and he had a great impact on the game. On 59 minutes he restored parity when he beautifully headed home a De Jong free kick. And just three minutes later Vennegoor subtly controlled a long ball with his chest before he struck home from the turn. PSV wanted to kill off the game quickly and again Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink proved his value and skills. Aerts may have seen the stunning shot produced by the tall striker, but he did not stand a single chance; 2-4. Beasley then started a mazy solo run past three defenders before strolling home the final goal of the night. Beasley was taken off and Farfán was handed his debut, but in the remaining fifteen minutes of official time no more goals were netted.

Goals:22 Smolders (1-0), 31 Vennegoor of Hesselink (1-1); 39 Smolders (2-1); 59 Sibon (2-2); 62 Vennegoor of Hesselink (2-3) ; 74 Vennegoor of Hesselink (2-4); 76 Beasley (2-5)
