Benfica 2 - 1 V. Guimarães

SL Benfica moved level on points with FC Porto at the top of the Portuguese SuperLiga on Monday night with a 2-1 victory at home against Vitória SC.

Tight at the top
Four teams had begun the weekend fixtures level at the top on 38 points, and champions Porto opened up a three-point cushion with a slender 1-0 win at CF Os Belenenses on Friday night. Both Sporting Clube de Portugal and Boavista FC were held on Saturday, but Benfica made no mistake in Monday's game.

Brazilian forward Geovanni gave Giovanni Trapattoni's side the perfect start, opening the scoring in the eleventh minute, and the points looked safe when midfield player Nuno Assis doubled the lead two minutes before half-time.

Guimarães fightback
However, visitors Guimarães halved the deficit in the first minute of the second period through César Peixoto, but the away side were unable to find an equaliser and their lingering hopes were effectively ended by the late dismissal of Brazilian striker Epidio Silva. Benfica therefore joined Porto on 41 points, but are second on goal difference.
