Benfica land Brazilian target Luiz

SL Benfica have signed Brazilian international centre-back André Luiz on a free transfer after his contract with Santos FC expired in December.

Double title winner
The defender, who had spent his entire career with Santos, has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal with Benfica. Capped once by his country, André Luiz won Brazilian championships with Santos in 2002 and 2004. He has begun training with his new team-mates and should be presented to the press on Monday.

Long-term target
Benfica had been targeting the player since last summer and, with the exception of Brazilian midfielder Roger's return from a loan spell with Fluminense FC, he is coach Giovanni Trapattoni's first winter signing.
