PSV 2 - 0 FC Twente

Eredivisie leaders PSV have coasted to a convincing 2-0 win over FC Twente in the Eindhoven Philips Stadium on Saturday night. The visitors, who last recorded a win in Eindhoven some twenty years ago, had no influence in things and were rarely threatening. 30.500 spectators saw PSV claim victory for the eleventh time in succession. Moreover their favourite team kept a clean sheet for the eleventh time in a row as well in a rather uneventful game.

PSV took the lead on fifteen minutes, when FC Twente keeper Cees Paauwe embarrassingly failed to stop a long distance effort from Gerald Sibon. The ball went through his legs and slowly crossed the line; 1-0 PSV dominated proceedings from start to finish and the game never became a proper game. The visitors were not able to earn one great chance and the only relevant question seemed to be when PSV would double the advantage. Johann Vogel, Phillip Cocu (who hit the bar with a header) and Jefferson Farfán all had their chances.

After the break the game continued in the same vein. It was one-way traffic towards the goal defended by FC Twente, but PSV did not up a gear. The Eindhoven dominated and were close to scoring a second goal, when Sibon could not get contact with a superb Van Bommel crossed. The tall striker missed the ball by one inch. FC Twente created one chance; substitute Raymond Fafiani shot on target and Gomes, the Brazilian PSV keeper, pulled off a fine save with an athletic dive.

PSV doubled the advantage on 66 minutes. Cocu simply headed home a free kick taken by substitute DaMarcus Beasley, who had been brought on for Farfán. The game was killed off and twenty minutes from final time it was not hard to answer the question which team would be the winning side tonight. Johan Vonlanthen left the bench on 72 minutes to replace his country fellow Vogel. FC Twente start striker Blaise N’Kufo was a lone wolf up front and in vain he waited to be set up by his team mates for the full 90 minutes.

PSV will now play three away games in a row. The team will be on the road to De Graafschap next Saturday night and they will face Panathinaikos and Feyenoord. PSV will entertain Roda JC on Saturday 18 December, which is the last game before the winter break.

Goals: 15 Sibon, 66 Cocu
