Olympique Lyonnais claimed the French Super Cup

Olympique Lyonnais claimed the French Super Cup for the third year running with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory against Paris Saint-Germain FC after a 1-1 draw in Cannes.

Tight match
As in 2002 and 2003, Lyon went into the fixture as champions aiming to beat the French Cup holders. But whereas Lyon beat FC Lorient 5-1 and AJ Auxerre 2-1 in those matches, PSG - also hoping to be the first team to win the Super Cup three times since it was reinstated in 1995 as the Trophée des Champions - took Les Gones all the way.

Elber goal
Lyon seen Vikash Dhorasoo, Péguy Luyindula, Patrick Müller and Edmílson depart since winning Ligue 1 last term, but striker Giovane Elber remains at the club and he put them ahead on 55 minutes. But PSG, who were second behind Lyon in the 2003/04 championship, levelled 16 minutes later through Fabrice Fiorese.

Berthod decisive
With scores level at 90 minutes, the game went straight to penalties. Both sides missed one of their first five spot-kicks, and each converted their next two to leave the score at 6-6. But Lyon goalkeeper Grégory Coupet saved PSG substitute Alioune Touré's effort and Jérémie Berthod kept his nerve to ensure this showpiece fixture was won by the reigning league champions for the fifth year in succession.
