NAC Breda 2 - 2 PSV
PSV have been able to extend their unbeaten run, but, in spite of a super Van Bommel first-minute goal, they had to come from behind to salvage one point, thanks to a goal scored by substitute Sibon. And, just like in previous games, two set pieces finished PSV off on a "hot" night in Breda.
PSV had a dream start: nearly sixty seconds were on the clock when captain Van Bommel put his side 0-1 up, by superbly slotting home a glorious long-distance volley just under the crossbar. NAC goalie Schollen had no chance whatsoever. PSV continued to press forward and created some excellent opportunities, but the strikers up front lacked sharpness. Vennegoor of Hesselink was put clear, but instead of slotting on target, he squared for Bøgelund, but meanwhile some NAC Breda defenders had returned to the area. Gradually the hosts got back into the game, but the level of the game did not improve. Many fouls were committed and it became a scrappy affair at times. PSV got another chance, when Van Bommel set up Vennegoor, but the forward, who was such a prolific striker in the season’s curtain riser, fired across the goal.
On the stroke of half time NAC restored parity. PSV keeper Zoetebier could not stop the header produced by Slot, from a free kick; 1-1. It was astonishing to see that Slot had been left completely unmarked: Alex marked Schenning, but Ooijer was not marking anybody. In first-half injury-time Diba was thwarted by Zoetebier.
Bouma came on at the restart for Vogel and Ooijer took over the position of Vogel in midfield. The hosts created the first dangerous moves in the second half. A free kick, easily awarded to NAC, was blasted home by Zonneveld; 2-1. On the hour mark Guus Hiddink brought on Sibon, wearing # 35, as an extra striker up front, for De Jong. It almost immediately paid off, when 30-year-old Sibon, who made a move from sc Heerenveen this summer, shot just across the goal. But soon afterwards he was on the right spot to finish a super Lee; 2-2.
The final thirty minutes it was all PSV. Vennegoor wasted a number of good opportunities and the relatively unknown NAC keeper Schollen rose to the occasion and pulled off a string of fine saves. NAC survived a barrage of attacks and just held on in an action-packed finale. PSV did not manage the score the winning goal and thus the Eindhoven team needlessly dropped two precious points. Bøgelund, Van Bommel and Stam were all booked
Goals: 1 Van Bommel (0-1); 43 Slot (1-1); 50 Zonneveld (2-1); 61 Sibon (2-2)
