ÍA Akranes wins Icelandic Super Cup
Julian Johnson
ÍA Akranes won the first staging of the Icelandic Super Cup in four years on Friday, with a 3-0 victory against champions KR Reykjavík in the indoor arena at Egilshöll.
The cup holders dominated the match, scoring all three goals in the first half. The opener arrived after 13 minutes when Gudjón Sveinsson's header found the target following a cross from Hjálmur Dór Hjálmsson. Faroe Islands international Julian Johnson nodded in the second 15 minutes later from a Haraldur Ingólfsson corner, and Stefán Thórdarson made it 3-0 after twisting through the KR defence.
The 2004 league season is due to start in mid-May, and ÍA captain Gunnlaugur Jónsson was encouraged by his team's performance. "We know we cannot celebrate anything yet - the season has not begun - but this shows we are on the right track," he said.
